I finally got the Event Calendar working today. It turns out it wasn’t a problem with the Event module or Drupal, but a bug in PHP 5.1.3! I upgrade to PHP 5.1.4 and the problem went away, along with problems in other parts of Drupal and in Gallery 2. The site seems very stable now.
